Ti 6Al-4V (Grade 5 Titanium) is the most prevalent titanium alloy tube, comprising over 50% of total titanium usage. Typically used in annealed states, it operates at temperatures up to 400°C (750°F). Ti 6Al/4V is welded with matching or ELI filler wire and has considerably higher strength than commercially pure titanium tubes, alongside better stiffness and thermal properties (excluding thermal conductivity). Its thermal conductivity is about 60% lower than CP titanium. Among its numerous benefits, it can be heat treated to enhance strength and performance. Grade 5 titanium seamless tubes offer exceptional formability, low density, and excellent corrosion resistance.
This grade excels in strength, corrosion resistance, weldability, and machinability, making it ideal for military aircraft, aviation, rocket components, precision-guided parts, armor parts, ship equipment, military vacuum equipment, and more. The 6-4, 6-4ELI variants are also used in surgical implants. Typically utilized up to 400°C, it enhances ductility and toughness in cold working conditions and has remarkable specific strength. Provided in the annealed state, it can be heat-treated to increase strength for numerous applications. As a versatile titanium alloy, Ti 6Al-4V seamless tubes offer a broad range of ideal properties between -210°C and 400°C. Grade 5 titanium alloy tube remains the most commercialized of all titanium alloys, merging high strength with toughness, and excellent welding and processing characteristics.

- Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)
INTRODUCTION
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) is the most renowned titanium alloy. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy leverages aluminium as an alpha stabiliser and vanadium as a beta stabiliser. Known for its high-strength characteristics, it is suitable for cryogenic temperatures up to approximately 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is employed in annealing, solution treatment, and ageing processes. Its versatility makes it ideal for compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines; fuselage and space capsule components; pressure containers; *** cases; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and significant forgings where a high strength-to-weight ratio is critical.
- This alloy is initially melted using vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Subsequent remelting processes involve one or two vacuum arc steps.

- In the solution treated and aged condition, small cross sections attain optimal properties through rapid quenching.
For larger sections or when a quench delay is present, properties might not achieve optimal values.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness in the annealed condition ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, and about Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution treated and aged condition.
FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at 1,750°F (954°C), ending at 1,450°F (788°C). For the best results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy presents significant challenges when formed at room temperature, even in its annealed state. Consequently, intense forming operations such as bending or stretching can be performed on annealed material at elevated temperatures-up to 1,200°F (649°C)-without compromising its mechanical integrity. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is recommended at temperatures ranging from 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).
MACHINABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be machined using techniques akin to those for austenitic stainless steels. Employ slow speeds, heavy feeds, and rigid
tooling, facilitated with generous quantities of non-chlorinated cutting fluid for optimal results.
WELDABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube lends itself to welding in its annealed or solution-treated, partially aged form, with aging.
- conducted during post-weld heat treatment. Care is essential to prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should occur in an inert gas-filled chamber, or with an inert gas tail shield applied to the molten metal and adjacent hot zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be executed without requiring a protective environment.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling, alongside absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treatment, brazing, and similar processes. Such contamination can diminish ductility, thus affecting notch sensitivity and forming properties.
