Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a premier duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar, boasting an impressive composition of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most widely used duplex stainless steel grade, it offers yield strength that is twice that of standard austenitic grades. With exceptional fatigue strength, it excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even under the most severe conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 showcases superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The alloy's chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen also provide exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in aggressive and acidic solutions.
- Resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and can withstand temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite presence ensures excellent performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- It is susceptible to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C) even for short periods, making it unsuitable for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits excellent weldability.
- Generally should not be welded without filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite content.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but Duplex 2205 does work-harden.
- Special considerations are needed to compensate for the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most Duplex 2205 manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, edges may cool faster than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
Duplex 2205 demonstrates good formability in various fabrications. Due to its high strength, provisions must be made for greater spring-back, even with sufficient equipment power.
MACHINABILITY
The duplex stainless steel bar 2205 poses a slightly greater challenge in machining compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steel. It demands higher cutting forces and leads to quicker tool wear. To ensure optimal results, consider the following machining guidelines: A) Employ a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Shorten tool extensions to minimize vibration; C) Avoid excessive tool nose radius to maintain a sharp carbide edge with sufficient strength; D) Strategically design the machining sequence to keep the depth of cut beneath the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
