CORROSION RESISTANCE:
316L Stainless Steel Rod
- Renowned for its superior corrosion resistance, 316 stainless steel surpasses 304 in various atmospheric environments and many corrosive media, thanks to its elevated chromium content.
Enhanced further by a higher molybdenum content. - While outstanding, it is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 122°F (50°C).
- It is generally considered resistant to potable water with up to approximately 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, decreasing to about 500mg/L at
140°F (60°C). - Widely regarded as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' it must be noted that it is not resistant to warm seawater.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- 316 stainless steel offers commendable oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and in continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
- The 316L grade is notably more resistant to carbide precipitation.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:
- Exhibits excellent weldability through all standard fusion methods, both with and without filler metals.
- For maximum corrosion resistance, heavy welded sections of Grade 316 require post-weld annealing, which is not necessary for Grade 316L.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- The annealing temperature range is between 1900°F to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
- It cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
- Special considerations are required to compensate for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to avoid warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
- Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C).
- Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final annealing process.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- 316/316L stainless steel rods are known for their exceptional toughness and ductility, making them highly suitable for cold working processes such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
bending, etc., without any difficulty. - Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve stresses.
MACHINABILITY:
- Due to its toughness, Type 316/316L stainless steel rod is somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304.
- 316/316L exhibits tough and strong chip characteristics.
- It is advisable to use chip breakers and curlers.
- Utilize the largest possible tools and copious amounts of cutting fluid.
- Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds, as 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
