CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Boasting superior resistance to corrosive attacks, this stainless steel outperforms all standard hardenable stainless variants.
- Comparable to the renowned Alloy 304 in the majority of environments.
- Exhibits remarkable corrosion resistance in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
- Vulnerable to crevice or pitting attacks when exposed to stagnant seawater over prolonged periods.
WELDABILITY:
- Can be welded successfully by most common fusion and resistance techniques.
- Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended.
- Pre-heating is generally unnecessary.
- Inter-pass temperature must be carefully controlled, limited to 248°F.
- Achieve superior toughness in welds through complete heat treatment processes.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Demonstrates excellent oxidation resistance up to 1100°F.
- Prolonged exposure to high temperatures may diminish toughness in precipitation hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For effective forging, uniformly heat to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- Ideal hot forming temperature is between 650-900°F while maintaining the austenitic state.
- To prepare for hardening, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F.
- Ensure grain refinement by cooling forgings below 90°F.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Alloy 17-4 is best suited for mild operations in its annealed (solution treated) state due to its inherent hardness.
- For severe cold working, heat treat to condition H1150 to prevent potential cracking.
- A bend radius exceeding 7T is typically required.
- Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature post cold forming is recommended to enhance stress corrosion resistance.
MACHINABILITY:
- This alloy can be efficiently machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardened conditions.
