- Its corrosion resistance is comparable to Alloy 304 in most environments, ensuring consistent performance and longevity.

- However, it is susceptible to crevice or pitting attack if exposed to stagnant sea water for extended periods, necessitating careful application and monitoring in marine environments.
WELDABILITY:
- This exceptional alloy can be successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance welding methods, ensuring strong and durable joints.
- It is not recommended to use oxyacetylene welding for this material, as it may compromise the integrity of the weld.
- Generally, pre-heating is not required prior to welding, simplifying the welding process and saving time.
- However, it is crucial to limit the inter-pass temperature to 248°F to maintain the material's optimal properties.
- To achieve better toughness in the weld, a complete heat treatment post-welding is highly recommended, ensuring the highest quality and performance of the welded joints.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- This alloy exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to approximately 1100°F, maintaining structural integrity and performance.
- However, prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures can result in reduced toughness in the precipitation-hardened conditions, necessitating careful management of operating conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, heat the alloy uniformly to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch to ensure thorough heating and optimal forging conditions.
- The preferred temperature range for hot forming is between 650-900°F while the steel remains austenitic, ensuring the best formability.
- To achieve the best condition for subsequent hardening operations, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F.
- Cool the forgings to below 90°F to promote grain refinement, ensuring the highest possible material quality.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- In its annealed (solution treated) condition, Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild cold forming operations due to its inherent hardness.
- For more severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150, which helps prevent cracking and ensures better formability.
- A bend radius exceeding 7T is often required for cold forming operations to avoid material failure.
- To enhance stress corrosion resistance after cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended.
MACHINABILITY:
- The alloy can be machined effectively in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions, providing versatility in manufacturing processes.
