Duplex 2205 Round Bar stands as a duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar, comprised of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. It holds the title as the most widely-utilized duplex stainless steel grade, boasting a yield strength that is double that of standard austenitic grades. This remarkable steel also showcases exceptional fatigue strength and unwavering resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion even in the harshest conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high content of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, Duplex 2205 showcases superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- Its composition also ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Exhibits resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and can withstand temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite component ensures excellent performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers commendable oxidation resistance at high temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement if exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) for even short durations; thus, it is not recommended for use beyond this temperature range.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 boasts excellent weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal is discouraged as it may lead to excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, Duplex 2205 does work-harden.
- Due to its higher coefficient of thermal expansion, special care must be taken to prevent warping and distortion during processing.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, the edges may cool significantly faster than the bulk, risking cracking in these cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
The Duplex 2205 stainless steel exhibits remarkable formability across various fabrications. However, its impressive high strength can present challenges. Even with powerful equipment, it's crucial to account for a greater spring-back due to the grade's robustness.
MACHINABILITY
Machining the Duplex 2205 stainless steel bar is slightly more demanding than working with the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires greater cutting forces, which lead to quicker tool wear. Follow these machining guidelines: A) Employ a powerful, rigid machine with robust tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Keep the tool nose radius as short as necessary to maintain a sharp carbide edge while ensuring strength; D) Sequence machining operations so that the cutting depth consistently stays below the work-hardened layer from previous steps.
