The 409 stainless steel tube stands out with its robust oxidation resistance and formability, despite lower corrosion resistance compared to grades 304, 430, or 439. However, it significantly outperforms mild steel. Techniques such as roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming are all viable for shaping 409. Post-annealing ensures it does not harden during cold treatment by methods like warm and roll forming, including press or stretch bending. While it boasts fair weldability, it is not recommended for structures prone to shock loading due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone, which affects mechanical integrity. Predominantly used in automotive exhaust systems, the 409 stainless steel tube's mechanical properties make it invaluable in the automotive and agricultural sectors, effectively resisting exhaust gas corrosion and high temperatures.
