Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general purpose stainless steel tube containing 11% chromium. It is particularly suitable for applications that require oxidation or corrosion resistance that carbon steel and some coated steels cannot provide. 409 tube has strong oxidation resistance and formability, but poor corrosion resistance due to the low chromium concentration. 409 tube has lower corrosion resistance than grades 304, 430 or 439, but its performance is better than mild steel. Roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing and press forming are all options for 409 forming. After annealing, 409 will not harden when cold treated using warm and roll forming processes such as press or stretch bending. 409 tube has fair weldability. This stainless material should not be used in shock loaded structures because the grain structure grows in the heat affected zone, which has a direct impact on mechanical quality. 409 is often used for tubing and stampings in automotive exhaust system applications. The mechanical properties of this stainless steel tube are significant advantages in the automotive and agricultural industries. It can well resist corrosion from exhaust gases and high temperature environments. However, mechanical properties are more important than the appearance of stainless steel. It is not recommended to use it for decorative purposes.

GENERAL PROPERTIES:
- Alloy 409 is a ferritic stainless steel that has been stabilised with chromium and titanium. Its principal application is automobile exhaust systems. It includes 11% chromium, which is the minimal amount required for the creation of the passive surface coating that provides stainless steels with corrosion resistance. It has strong corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures, medium strength, decent formability, and an affordable total price. Alloy 409 resists corrosion more strongly than carbon steel and is used as an alternative to carbon steel in slightly demanding conditions where its high resistance to corrosion and high temperature oxidation provide an advantage. It is often employed in applications where appearance is secondary to mechanical qualities and corrosion resistance.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:

- Post-weld annealing at 1400 to 1499oF improved weld ductility
