- The ferritic, pure chromium grade 430 is non-hardenable, offering excellent formability, corrosion resistance, and practical mechanical properties. Its resistance to *** corrosion makes it valuable in certain chemical applications, though its primary uses are in appliance parts and automotive trim.
- Grade 430F, a more machinable variant of this grade, is available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434 contains molybdenum, enhancing its corrosion resistance while retaining the beneficial characteristics of Grade 430.
- ASTM A240/A240M meticulously defines the 430 qualities for flat rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Similar, although not always identical, attributes are detailed in the specifications for other products, including bars and forgings. For bars, ASTM A582 outlines the Grade 430F characteristics.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 demonstrates excellent resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including *** and certain organic acids. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved with a highly polished or ground finish. Its overall resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is on par with Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 offers exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining Grade 430F, as well as other high-sulfur free machining grades, has significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation up to 870°C for intermittent service and 815°C for continuous service. Extended heating between 400-600°C can cause the material to become brittle at room temperature, but annealing can mitigate this effect.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for 30 minutes per 25mm of thickness, slowly furnace cool to 600°C, then air cool quickly. Slow cooling from 540-400°C may cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, followed by air cooling or water quenching.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- If welding is required, pre-heat at 150-200°C.
- Embrittlement in the weld and heat-affected zones can be alleviated by post-weld annealing at 790-815°C.
- Grain refinement does not occur.
MACHINING:
- Easier to machine than standard austenitic grades like 304.
- There is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tools.
- Bars that are lightly drawn are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- The free machining version, Grade 430F, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- With a lower work hardening rate, bending and forming are somewhat easier than for Grade 304.
- However, lower ductility restricts extremely severe operations.
- Severe bends should be oriented with the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible.
