CORROSION RESISTANCE:
316L Stainless steel rod
- 316L stainless steel rod stands superior to 304 in a variety of atmospheric environments and numerous corrosive media owing to its enhanced chromium and molybdenum content.
This unique composition ensures remarkable resistance to corrosion. - Despite its impressive resistance, it can experience pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and stress corrosion cracking above 122°F (50°C).
- 316L stainless steel is considered resilient in potable water with chlorides up to about 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, reducing to about 500mg/L at 140°F (60°C).
Its corrosion resistance adapts to these varying conditions efficiently. - Often hailed as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' it still remains vulnerable to warm sea water.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Exhibiting excellent oxidation resistance, it performs well in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
- Grade 316L particularly excels in resisting carbide precipitation.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:
- 316L stainless steel showcases exceptional weldability across all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
- Post-weld annealing is crucial for heavy welded sections in Grade 316 to ensure maximum corrosion resistance, though this step is unnecessary for Grade 316L.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- The optimal annealing temperature range for 316L stainless steel falls between 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
- Hardening through heat treatment is not possible.
- Special attention is required to counteract a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- Manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F for best results.
- Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) to maintain the material's integrity.
- For optimal corrosion resistance, a final annealing of the forgings is advised.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- 316/316L stainless steel rods, known for their toughness and ductility, can be effortlessly cold worked through techniques such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing, bending, etc.
To alleviate stresses, severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing. - This ensures the material retains its superior properties.
MACHINABILITY:
- Due to its toughness, machining Type 316/316L stainless steel rod is more challenging than Type 304.
- 316/316L machines produce tough and strong chips.
- Using chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
- Employing the largest possible tool with abundant cutting fluid is advised for optimal results.
- Heavy positive feeds at low speeds are beneficial as 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
