CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- This alloy showcases superior resistance to corrosion, outperforming all standard hardenable stainless steels.
- Offers corrosion resistance comparable to Alloy 304 in most environments.
- Proven corrosion resistance in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
- May be prone to crevice or pitting corrosion when exposed to stagnant seawater for extended periods.
WELDABILITY:
- Easily weldable using common fusion and resistance welding methods.
- Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding.
- Typically, pre-heating is not required.
- Inter-pass temperature must be strictly controlled, staying below 248°F.
- Achieves enhanced toughness in the welds with complete heat treatment.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to 1100°F.
- Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and maintain for 30 minutes per inch of thickness.
- Optimal hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F, ensuring the steel remains austenitic.
- To optimize hardening, forgings must be re-heat treated at 1875-1925°F.
- Ensure forgings cool below 90°F to achieve grain refinement.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Due to its hardness in the annealed state, Alloy 17-4 is suitable only for mild cold forming operations.
- For severe cold working, heat treat to H1150 condition to minimize cracking risks.
- A bend radius greater than 7 times the material thickness is often necessary.
- Post-cold forming, re-aging at precipitation-hardening temperatures is recommended to enhance stress corrosion resistance.
MACHINABILITY:
- This alloy can be effectively machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardened conditions.
