Ti-6Al-4V - Grade 5 Titanium Tube
- Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)
INTRODUCTION
- The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) stands out as the most popular titanium alloy in the market. This remarkable duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy leverages aluminium as an alpha stabilizer and vanadium as a beta stabilizer, offering exceptional high-strength performance even at cryogenic temperatures nearing 800°F (427°C). Reputed for its versatility, the ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is extensively used in annealing, solution treatment, and ageing processes. Its applications span a broad range of high-performance needs including compressor blades, discs, and rings for jet engines, fuselage and space capsule components, pressure containers, *** cases, helicopter rotor hubs, fasteners, and critical forgings that demand a high strength-to-weight ratio.
- Initially, the alloy undergoes melting via vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM) techniques. This is followed by a remelting process involving one or two vacuum arc steps to ensure optimal quality.
SPECIFICATIONS
• ASTM B338 - Standard for heat-treatable titanium tubes
• AMS 4928 - Specifications for annealed forgings and forging stock
• AMS 4965 - Standards for forgings (solution treated and aged)
• AMS 4967 - Criteria for heat-treatable annealed forgings
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
- Melting Range: 2,800-3,000°F (1,538-1,649°C)
- Density: 0.160 lbs/cu. in.; 4.47 gm/cc
- Beta Transus Temperature: 1830°F (± 25°); 999°C (± 14°)
HEAT TREATMENT
- Annealing at 1,700-1,900°F (927-1,038°C) is undertaken to achieve high hardness, tensile, and fatigue strength.
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy allows multiple heat treatment methods for tailored performance.
- 1. Anneal: 1,275-1,400°F (691-760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000-1,200°F (538-649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
- 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675-1,750°F (913-954°C), 1 hour, water quench
- 4. Aging Treatment: 975-1,025°F (524-552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool
- For the best properties in the solution-treated and aged condition, quickly achieve small cross-sections. Any delays or larger section sizes may reduce the properties to below optimal values.
Larger sections or delayed quenching might result in lower-than-optimal properties.
HARDNESS
Typically, the hardness in the annealed state ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution and aged states, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.
FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at an initial temperature of 1,750°F (954°C), with an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For superior results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy, known for its formidable strength and robustness, presents challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. Therefore, demanding forming operations such as bending or stretching are optimally conducted on annealed materials at elevated temperatures, reaching up to 1,200°F (649°C), without compromising mechanical properties. Creep forming is an effective method for hot sizing or shaping, with ideal temperatures ranging between 1,000 and 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).
MACHINABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be precisely machined utilizing methods akin to those for austenitic stainless steels. Employ slow speeds, substantial feeds, and ensure rigid setup.
For optimal performance, use sturdy tooling and a generous supply of non-chlorinated cutting fluid.
WELDABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube boasts excellent weldability in both the annealed and solution-aged forms. Post-weld aging is recommended.
- Ensure precautions to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding is best performed in an inert gas environment or by using an inert gas tail shield on the molten metal and nearby hot zone. Spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be executed without a protective atmosphere.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to contamination with hydrogen from improper pickling and absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes such as forging, heat treatment, and brazing. This contamination can reduce ductility, which may impact notch sensitivity and forming capabilities.
