CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its elevated chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 showcases unmatched corrosion resistance, outperforming 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The enriched chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen also contribute to its exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic conditions.
- Duplex 2205 is resilient against chloride stress corrosion cracking and can withstand temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite phase in Duplex 2205 ensures strong performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205 mirrors other duplex stainless steels in its excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures.
- Be cautious of embrittlement when exposed to temperatures exceeding 572°F (300°C), even for short durations; hence, it is not recommended for use above 572°F (300°C).
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 offers excellent weldability.
- Avoid welding without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite buildup.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Annealing temperature range spans from 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened through heat treatment but does become work-hardened.
- Special attention is required to address the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Leading producers of Duplex 2205 recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece isn't compact, the edges may cool significantly more than the bulk, posing a risk of cracking in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
Duplex 2205 stands out with its remarkable formability across various fabrications. However, its exceptional strength can present challenges. Even with sufficiently powered equipment, considerations must be made for increased spring-back due to the grade's high strength.
MACHINABILITY
Machining Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 is more demanding compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steel. It requires higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Follow these guidelines for optimal machining: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with a strong tool and workpiece mount; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Keep the tool nose radius as short as feasible to maintain a sharp carbide edge while ensuring adequate strength; D) Sequence the machining operations so that each cut remains beneath the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
