ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Extended exposure to higher temperatures can lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 surpasses conventional austenitic stainless steels with more than twice the strength in the annealed condition. It is also available in a cold-worked condition with a yield strength exceeding 160 ksi, maintaining good toughness even at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is highly formable through cold forming. Due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate annealing may be necessary. Post hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance, outperforming 316 and 316L in the majority of environments.
- The alloy's chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen composition also ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Remarkably resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking, capable of withstanding temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite presence enhances Duplex 2205's performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 possesses commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- Subject to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures exceeding 572°F (300°C) even briefly; thus, Duplex 2205 is not recommended for use above 572°F (300°C).
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits excellent weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal should be avoided to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment; however, it does work-harden.
- Special care is required to adjust for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece lacks compactness, the edges may be significantly cooler than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in cooler areas.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube offers exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength, while beneficial, requires consideration due to the increased springback effect. Ensuring that equipment is sufficiently powerful is crucial to manage this grade's specific demands.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 presents slightly more machining challenges compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The increased cutting forces lead to faster tool wear. For optimal results, adhere to these guidelines: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with secure tool and workpiece mounts; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Maintain a minimal tool nose radius to ensure sharpness without compromising strength; D) Sequence machining to keep the depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from the prior operation.
