COMPREHENSIVE SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT GUIDELINES
- For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench.
- 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool.
In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections achieves optimum properties. For larger sections and/or delayed quenching, properties may be suboptimal.
EXCEPTIONAL HARDNESS RATINGS
The typical hardness for the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, while the solution and aged condition is around Rockwell C 35-39.
FORGEABILITY AND FORMABILITY EXCELLENCE
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forged at 1,750°F; (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F; (788°C). A minimum reduction of 35% is recommended to achieve optimum properties.
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. To achieve severe forming operations like bending or stretching, the material can be heated up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming is effectively conducted through creep forming within the temperature range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
Machining the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be accomplished using methods designed for austenitic stainless steel. This involves slow machining speeds, high feed rates, rigid tooling, and copious amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids for optimal results.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable whether in the annealed state or in the solution and partially aged condition, with post-weld heat treatment facilitating aging. Essential precautions include avoiding contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should occur in an inert gas-filled chamber or utilize inert gas for welding the molten metal and nearby heated zones, using a tail shield. Spot, seam, and flash welding can also be performed without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
Care must be taken with the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod to avoid contamination from hydrogen due to improper pickling, and from oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, brazing, etc. Such contamination can lead to a reduction in ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod: Superior quality titanium rods for various applications.
Corrosion resistance: Outstanding resistance against a variety of corrosive environments.
Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General corrosion: Exceptional performance in resisting general corrosion across different environments.
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in a variety of media are shown in Table 1. CP titanium exhibits good corrosion resistance to a wide variety of environments including:
- Seawater and brines: Resilient against corrosive qualities of seawater and brine solutions.
- Inorganic salts: Maintains integrity in the presence of various inorganic salts.
- Moist *** gas: Durable against the corrosive nature of moist *** gas.
- Alkaline solutions: Resistant to degradation from alkaline environments.
- Oxidizing acids: Stands firm against the effects of oxidizing acids.
- Organics and organic acids: Effective resistance to organic compounds and acids.
- Sulfur compounds: Engineered to withstand sulfur compound exposure.
Crevice corrosion: CP titanium shows superior performance against crevice corrosion in salt solutions.
CP titanium exhibits good resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. CP titanium will not exhibit crevice corrosion at temperatures under 80 °C (176°F) regardless of pH, even under super chlorinated conditions.
Stress corrosion cracking: Grade 2 titanium excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking in harsh environments.
Grade 2 titanium shows excellent resistance to stress corrosion (SCC) cracking in hot chloride solutions and is immune to sec in seawater.
Erosion corrosion: Outstanding erosion resistance in dynamic, flowing environments.
Titanium shows excellent resistance to erosion in flowing environments, ensuring long-lasting performance even in challenging conditions.
Experience the unmatched resilience of our titanium rods when exposed to seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), showing negligible material degradation. Even the presence of abrasive particles like sand has only a minimal effect on corrosion resistance.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Our titanium products demonstrate exceptional resistance to hydrogen absorption, even when exposed to seawater at elevated temperatures. Generally, hydrogen absorption only takes place when the following conditions are simultaneously met:
- The pH level is < 3 or > 12
- Temperature exceeds 176F (80C)
- A mechanism for hydrogen generation exists, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit an unparalleled immunity to all types of microbiologically influenced corrosion. Although biofouling can occur due to the non-toxic nature of titanium towards marine organisms, it can be efficiently minimized through chlorination or by increasing the water velocity through heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many materials, our titanium rods do not suffer from reduced fatigue performance in seawater. Both fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain consistent, whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned towards the noble end, near stainless steels, and typically acts as the cathode when coupled with other metals. This means titanium itself remains unharmed by galvanic corrosion but can accelerate the corrosion of the less noble metals. Pairing titanium with more noble metals, such as graphite, further enhances its natural passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod does not exhibit degradation in fatigue properties when exposed to seawater. Fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are identical, whether tested in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod offers excellent weldability, provided the necessary precautions are followed. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must be applied to both the outer and inner diameters of the rod. Additionally, the material should be free from grease or oil contamination.
Grade 2 Titanium Rod is typically welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. To minimize the heat-affected zone, low heat input should be employed. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.
