GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a high-performance, duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Renowned as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts yield strength double that of conventional austenitic grades. Its superior fatigue strength and remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion make it ideal for use in the harshest conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 showcases exceptional corrosion resistance, surpassing 316 and 316L in a majority of environments.
- The chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen composition also delivers superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic conditions.
- Duplex 2205 is resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and can endure temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- Its ferritic structure allows Duplex 2205 to perform exceptionally well in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205, like other duplex stainless steels, offers commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is susceptible to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short periods. For this reason, Duplex 2205 is not recommended for use beyond this temperature threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 is known for its excellent weldability.
- However, welding without filler metal is generally not advised as it may lead to excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The recommended annealing temperature range for Duplex 2205 is between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- While Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment, it does exhibit work-hardening properties.
- Special care must be taken to compensate for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece lacks a compact shape, the edges may cool significantly compared to the bulk, posing a risk of cracking.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
Duplex 2205 showcases exceptional formability across numerous fabrications, but its inherent high strength can sometimes present challenges. Even with adequately powered equipment, it's essential to account for increased spring-back caused by the grade's robust nature.
MACHINABILITY
Machining Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 is slightly more complex compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steel. The need for higher cutting forces results in quicker tool wear. Follow these guidelines for effective machining: A) Employ a powerful, rigid machine with a strong tool and workpiece mount; B) Maintain short tool extensions to reduce vibrations; C) Ensure the tool nose radius isn't excessively long, keeping the carbide edge sharp and robust; D) Plan the machining sequence to ensure the depth of cut penetrates below the hardened layer from previous operations.
