A global leader in stainless steel pipe fabrication services Martensitic 410 stainless steel pipe, like most non-stainless steels, gains toughness through a 'quench and temper' heat treatment. Featuring at least 11.5% chromium, 410 stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance, especially when tempered and polished post-hardening. This versatile grade is typically hardened but remains machinable, making it ideal for applications demanding moderate heat, corrosion resistance, and high strength. While its primary attribute is high hardness, it does come with trade-offs such as poorer weldability and the necessity for final heat treatment. Martensitic stainless steels, including 410, exhibit lower corrosion resistance than austenitic stainless steels and lose ductility at freezing temperatures. Over-tempering can reduce strength at temperatures above freezing, thus limiting their effective operational range. Widely used, 410 stainless steel pipe offers a 12% chromium composition, allowing for a broad spectrum of mechanical properties through heat treatment. It combines high strength and hardness with good corrosion resistance, and exhibits ductility and forgeability. Additionally, it is magnetic under all conditions. Note, however, it is not ideal for environments with severe corrosion threats.

- Corrosion Resistance
410 stainless steel resists dry air, fresh water, mild bases and acids, food substances, steam, and hot gases.
For peak heat and corrosion resistance, 410 stainless steel must be hardened. Optimal performance is achieved when the material is smooth.
Heat Resistance
410 stainless steel demonstrates good resistance to scaling up to approximately 650°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use between 400 and 580°C due to reduced mechanical properties.
Heat Treatment
Fully anneal at 815-900°C, followed by a slow furnace cooling to 600°C, then air cooling.
Process anneal at 650-760°C and then air cool.
Welding
410 stainless steel can be easily welded using all standard methods. Preheating to 150-260°C and post-weld annealing are recommended to minimize cracking risks.
