Grade 409 is a stable, ferritic general-purpose stainless steel tube boasting an 11% chromium content. This composition makes it ideal for applications demanding oxidation or corrosion resistance beyond what carbon steel and certain coated steels can provide. Although Grade 409 exhibits excellent oxidation resistance and formability, its lower chromium content results in reduced corrosion resistance compared to grades 304, 430, and 439. Nevertheless, it outperforms mild steel. The tube can undergo roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming. Post-annealing, 409 will not harden during cold treatment, making it suitable for warm and roll forming processes like press or stretch bending. While 409 offers reasonable weldability, it is not recommended for shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in heat-affected zones, which adversely affects mechanical properties. Predominantly used in automotive exhaust systems, the mechanical properties of this tube are advantageous in the automotive and agricultural sectors, providing substantial resistance to corrosion from exhaust gases and high-temperature environments. Despite these benefits, it is not recommended for decorative purposes due to its mechanical focus over aesthetic appeal.
