ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Alloy 2205 is limited to an upper temperature of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure above this limit may cause embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 offers more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels when annealed. It can also be supplied in a cold-worked condition with yield strength surpassing 160 ksi, maintaining excellent toughness down to -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is amenable to cold forming but exhibits a high work-hardening rate, necessitating intermediate anneals. Post hot or cold forming, annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.

HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 demonstrates good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits good weldability.
- Generally, avoid welding without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range is 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment but does work-harden.
- Special attention is required to manage the higher coefficient of thermal expansion and prevent warping and distortion.

Here are essential machining guidelines: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with solid tool and workpiece mounts; B) Maintain short tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is no larger than necessary for a sharp edge with adequate strength; D) Design the machining sequence to keep the depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
