- Ferritic, pure chromium, non-hardenable Grade 430 offers excellent formability and corrosion resistance along with practical mechanical qualities. Its resistance to *** corrosion makes it useful in certain chemical applications, though it is primarily used in appliance parts and automobile trim.
- For use in automatic screw machines, Grade 430F is a more machinable version available in bar form. Grade 434, containing molybdenum, shares the beneficial characteristics of Grade 430, with enhanced corrosion resistance due to the added molybdenum.
- ASTM A240/A240M specifies the high-quality 430 grade stainless steel for flat-rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. While similar characteristics might be found in specifications for other products like bars and forgings, these are not always identical. CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 stainless steel is highly resistant to a variety of corrosive environments, including nitric and certain organic acids. When polished or ground to a high finish, its corrosion resistance is maximized, matching that of grade 304 in terms of pitting and crevice corrosion. As with all ferritic grades, it demonstrates exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The 430F grade, being non-free machining, shows significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high-sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 stainless steel withstands oxidation up to 870°C during intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating within the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be alleviated by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing involves heating to 815-845°C, holding for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slowly cooling in a furnace to 600°C before rapidly air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal requires heating to 760-815°C followed by air cooling or water quenching.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heating at 150-200°C is recommended if welding is necessary.
- Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C can mitigate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zones.
- No grain refinement will occur.
MACHINING:
- Easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- There remains a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that are lightly drawn are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- The 430F grade, a free machining variant of 430, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- A lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming easier compared to grade 304.
- However, lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be oriented with the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
