CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- This exceptional stainless steel resists corrosive attacks far better than any standard hardenable stainless steel.
- Its corrosion resistance is comparable to Alloy 304 when used in most media.
- Highly effective in resisting corrosion within chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
- However, it may suffer crevice or pitting corrosion if exposed to stagnant sea water for prolonged periods.
WELDABILITY:
- Can be successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance welding methods.
- Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended for this alloy.
- Generally, pre-heating is not required before welding.
- Ensure inter-pass temperature does not exceed 248°F to maintain quality.
- Perform a complete heat treatment post-welding for improved toughness.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- This alloy boasts excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
- Be cautious: long-term exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, uniformly heat to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- Optimal hot forming occurs between 650-900°F while the steel remains austenitic.
- Post-forming, re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F to ensure ideal conditions for hardening.
- Cool forgings below 90°F to achieve grain refinement.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- In its annealed (solution treated) condition, Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild cold forming operations due to its hardness.
- Heat treat to condition H1150 for severe cold working to prevent potential cracking.
- A bend radius exceeding 7T is often necessary for forming.
- Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature post-cold forming enhances stress corrosion resistance.
MACHINABILITY:
- This alloy is machinable in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
