CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Our 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Rods exhibit superior resistance to corrosive attacks, outperforming all standard hardenable stainless steels.
- In terms of corrosion resistance, it is on par with Alloy 304 in most environments.
- Ideal for use in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries, where corrosion resistance is a critical factor.
- However, exposure to stagnant sea water over extended periods may lead to crevice or pitting attack.
WELDABILITY:
- Can be effectively welded using most common fusion and resistance welding techniques.
- Note: Avoid using oxyacetylene welding methods for this alloy.
- Typically, no pre-heating is required before welding.
- Maintain an inter-pass temperature below 248°F to ensure material integrity.
- Complete heat treatment of the weld enhances toughness significantly.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Offers exceptional oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
- Be aware that prolonged exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in the precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For effective forging, uniformly heat to 2150 / 2200°F, maintaining this temperature for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- The optimal hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F while the steel remains austenitic.
- To achieve optimal hardening conditions, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F.
- Ensure the forgings cool to below 90°F to promote grain refinement.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- In its annealed (solution treated) condition, Alloy 17-4 is suitable only for mild cold forming operations due to its hardness.
- For more severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to minimize the risk of cracking.
- A bend radius greater than 7T is typically required during cold forming.
- Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature post-cold forming is recommended to enhance stress corrosion resistance.
MACHINABILITY:
- This alloy can be efficiently machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
