CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Withstands corrosive attacks better than any of the standard hardenable stainless steels.
- Comparable to Alloy 304 in most media.
- Exhibits remarkable corrosion resistance in various industries including chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing.
- However, it may experience crevice or pitting attack if exposed to stagnant sea water for prolonged periods.
WELDABILITY:
- Easily welded using most common fusion and resistance techniques.
- Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended.
- Typically, no pre-heating is required.
- The inter-pass temperature should be kept below 248°F.
- Post-weld heat treatment enhances toughness in the weld.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Demonstrates excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
- Extended exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- Optimum temperature range for hot forming is 650-900°F while the steel remains austenitic.
- To ensure optimal hardening, re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F.
- Cool forgings below 90°F to achieve grain refinement.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild operations due to its hardness in the annealed (solution treated) condition.
- For more severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent cracking.
- A bend radius greater than 7T is often necessary.
- For improved stress corrosion resistance post cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended.
MACHINABILITY:
- Can be efficiently machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
