ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this threshold may cause embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 exhibits more than double the strength of traditional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed state. It can also be provided in a cold-worked condition with yield strength surpassing 160 ksi, maintaining excellent toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be cold formed, but due to its high work-hardening rate, intermediate anneals may be necessary. Post-forming annealing is also recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its elevated chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 showcases superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- The presence of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen also enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in harsh oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Exhibits robust resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and withstands temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite content ensures excellent performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers good oxidation resistance at high temperatures.
- However, it may become embrittled when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations; hence, it is not recommended for usage above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Features excellent weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal is not advisable as it may result in excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, though Duplex 2205 does undergo work hardening.
- Special precautions must be taken to account for the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). It is crucial to ensure that the workpiece remains compact to avoid the risk of cracking in cooler areas.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube stands out with its exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even with adequate equipment, the substantial springback inherent to Duplex 2205 must always be considered.
MACHINABILITY
Machining Duplex 2205 is a bit more demanding compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels, requiring higher cutting forces which accelerate tool wear. Follow these machining guidelines for optimal results: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with exceptionally strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibration; C) Limit the tool nose radius to maintain a sharp edge on the carbide, ensuring it is still strong enough; D) Plan the machining sequence so each cut's depth remains below the work-hardened layer from the prior operation.
