Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a high-performance duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Known as the most versatile and widely used duplex grade, it boasts double the yield strength of regular austenitic grades, exceptional fatigue strength, and superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, it excels against crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion even in the harshest environments.
Most manufacturers recommend keeping the maximum hot forming temperature between 2010°F and 2100°F (1100°C to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not solid, the edges might cool faster than the bulk, increasing the risk of edge cracking.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases exceptional formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even with powerful equipment, the increased springback due to this grade's high strength needs careful consideration.
Machining Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. It requires higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Follow these guidelines for optimal results: A) Utilize robust, rigid machinery with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is only as long as necessary to maintain a sharp edge while providing sufficient strength; D) Sequence machining steps so that the depth of cut consistently remains below the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
