CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- Its chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content also provide excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic conditions.

HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 demonstrates good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations; hence, it is not recommended for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 stainless steel showcases excellent weldability.
- However, welding without filler metal is not advisable as it may result in excessive ferrite.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The ideal annealing temperature range is between 1868°F and 2012°F (1020°C to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment but does work-harden.
- Special considerations are needed to offset its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most manufacturers recommend keeping the maximum hot forming temperature between 2010°F and 2100°F (1100°C to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not solid, the edges might cool faster than the bulk, increasing the risk of edge cracking.

Follow these guidelines for optimal results: A) Utilize robust, rigid machinery with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is only as long as necessary to maintain a sharp edge while providing sufficient strength; D) Sequence machining steps so that the depth of cut consistently remains below the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
