- Stainless Steel 904L is distinguished by its low carbon content and high copper concentration, which make it exceptionally resistant to strong acids such as sulfuric acid. Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L is easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.
Cold Forming
- 904L's high ductility allows for easy forming. However, the inclusion of molybdenum and nitrogen necessitates the use of more powerful processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L require temperatures between 1562-2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working is followed by a solution anneal and quench. If hot forming stops at temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C) and is immediately quenched, further heat treatment may not be needed. It's crucial that the entire workpiece undergoes quenching from above 2012°F (1100°C). If any part of the cooling process falls below this temperature or cooling is too slow, hot working should be followed by a solution anneal and quenching. Solution annealing should be done at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L is higher than that of 410 and 304 stainless steels, making it less machinable.
Welding
- 904L is compatible with most conventional welding methods. Its austenitic structure ensures an even distribution of alloying elements such as molybdenum, chromium, and nickel during solidification post-welding. These elements can segregate, reducing corrosion resistance; however, segregation is minimal in 904L. It is typically welded with filler metal of the same composition as the base metal but can also be welded without filler.
- Welding consumables for 904L include the 20 25 CuL covered electrode and 20 25 CuL wire.
