Ti-6Al-4V - Grade 5 Titanium Tube
- Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)
INTRODUCTION
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) is the most sought-after titanium alloy, renowned for its duplex alpha+beta structure. Utilizing aluminium as an alpha stabilizer and vanadium as a beta stabilizer, this high-strength alloy excels even at cryogenic temperatures reaching around 800°F (427°C). ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is versatile, suitable for annealing, solution treatment, and aging. It's extensively used in critical aerospace components such as jet engine compressor blades, discs, and rings; fuselage and space capsule parts; pressure containers; *** casings; helicopter rotor hubs; fasteners; and other crucial high-strength forgings.
- This titanium alloy begins its life through vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Remelting is typically done in one or two vacuum arc steps, ensuring purity and consistency.
SPECIFICATIONS
• ASTM B338 - Standard for heat-treatable titanium tubes
• AMS 4928 - Standards for forgings and forging stock (annealed)
• AMS 4965 - Standards for forgings (solution treated and aged)
• AMS 4967 - Standards for forgings (annealed, heat treatable)
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
- Melting Range: 2,800-3,000°F (1,538 - 1,649°C)
- Density: 0.160 lbs/cu. in.; 4.47 gm/cc
- Beta Transus Temperature: 1830°F (± 25°); 999°C (± 14°)
HEAT TREATMENT
- For achieving high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, annealing is performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
- DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy can undergo multiple heat treatment processes.
- 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000-1,200°F (538 - 649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour, followed by water quenching.
- 4. Aging Treatment: 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.
- Achieving optimal properties in the solution treated and aged condition requires rapid quenching of small cross-sections. Larger sections or delays in quenching may result in suboptimal properties.
Larger sections or quench delays can result in properties that fall short of the optimal values.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness falls between Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition, and Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution treated and aged condition.
FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are best forged at 1,750°F (954°C), with an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For optimal results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended in the forging process.
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy, renowned for its exceptional strength, presents challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. This resilient material allows intense forming operations, such as bending or stretching, at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C), without compromising its mechanical integrity. For hot sizing or forming, creep forming is recommended within the range of 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).
MACHINABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be machined effectively by employing techniques used for austenitic stainless steels. The process demands slow speeds, heavy feeds, and extremely rigid
tooling, accompanied by substantial amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluid.
WELDABILITY
- The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube is highly weldable in both its annealed and solution-treated forms, with subsequent ageing process.
- during post-weld heat treatment. Careful measures should be taken to prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should be executed in an inert gas-filled chamber or with an inert gas tail shield applied to the molten metal and adjacent hot zones. Spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be conducted without a protective environment.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is vulnerable to hydrogen contamination due to improper pickling and the absorption of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treatment, and brazing. Such contamination can reduce ductility, affecting notch sensitivity and forming properties.
