No.2D	Annealing and pickling are performed after cold rolling; material is soft with surface of silver-white luster; used for general applications and deep drawing.
No.2B	After 2D finish, skin pass rolling is performed to obtain a more suitable luster; the surface becomes very exquisite; used for general applications.

Grade 904L:

• Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. The inclusion of copper makes this grade significantly more resistant to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid. It also offers robust protection against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
• This grade exhibits outstanding formability and weldability, remaining non-magnetic under all conditions. Thanks to its austenitic structure, 904L boasts exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
• The 904L grade stainless steel, known for its high content of costly elements like nickel and molybdenum, has seen reduced usage due to the cost-effective Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205), which performs equally well in many traditional applications.

Corrosion Resistance:

• Originally developed for its sulfuric acid resistance, 904L stands out for its exceptional resilience across various conditions. It excels in warm seawater and high chloride environments, verified by a PRE of 35. Its high nickel content offers superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to standard austenitic grades. Furthermore, copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric and other reducing acids, particularly in aggressive mid-concentration ranges.
• 904L's corrosion resistance is intermediate, surpassing the ordinary austenitic grade 316L but not quite reaching the level of highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades with 6% molybdenum.
• When compared to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, 904L demonstrates lower resistance to strong environments.
• For optimal resistance to stress corrosion cracking in demanding environments, 904L should undergo solution treatment following cold work.

Heat Resistance:

• 904L offers robust oxidation resistance, but like other highly alloyed grades, it experiences structural instability at higher temperatures. It is particularly susceptible to brittle phase precipitation above 550°C. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets the design stress values for 904L up to 371°C.

Heat Treatment:

• Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat the material to 1090-1175°C and cool it rapidly for best results. Note that 904L cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.

Welding:

• 904L can be effectively welded using all standard techniques. Due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is prone to heat cracking, especially in constrained weldments. It's advisable to avoid pre-heating, and post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6 for welding.

Fabrication:

• As a high purity, low sulfur grade, 904L does not machine as well as machinability-enhanced grades. Yet, conventional methods can be used. Cold bending to achieve a small radius is typically straightforward. While subsequent annealing is generally unnecessary, it should be considered for environments with severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.

Typical Applications:

• 904L is ideal for a variety of demanding applications including sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acid processing plants, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plant components, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.

Specified Properties:

• As per ASTM A240M, 904L's characteristics are specified for flat rolled products including plates, sheets, and coils. Similar, though not identical, specifications apply to other products like pipes, tubes, and bars.
