Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel that boasts superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. ASTM A240 outlines three (3) subcategories of Type 409 stainless steel: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930. Each of these has distinct Ti or Nb stabilization requirements, unless specified otherwise by the purchaser, all can be provided as UNS S40900. Known in the industry for its improved formability properties, it is often referred to as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form'.

Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel known for its versatility. Predominantly utilized in automotive exhaust systems, this general-purpose chromium stainless steel excels in applications that prioritize mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and weldability over appearance, especially in high-temperature environments.
- ASTM standards, including ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, now categorize S40910, S40920, and S40930 as 'sub-grades' instead of the broader Grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying degrees with titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Any of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). Note that ASTM A268M only lists the standard Grade 409 for tubing applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 exhibits strong resistance to atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. Although a light surface rust may form in most environments, it prevents further corrosion but is not ideal for cosmetic purposes. Its corrosion resistance is comparable to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410) but less than the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and in continuous service up to 675°C. These thresholds may vary based on specific service conditions.
Heat Treatment
- Annealing: Heat to 790-900 degrees Celsius, then cool in the air. This grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld. Pre-heating to 150-260°C is recommended. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods can be used, welding with Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified under AS 1554.6. These austenitic fillers result in a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
Post-weld annealing is not necessary for welding small sections. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded autogenously (without filler metal).
To prevent grain formation impacts, all welding should be performed with minimal heat.

Ideal for automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties
- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for Grade 409 in annealed tubing, while ASTM A240M defines the composition for additional grades in coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other products may include similar but not identical properties.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn with ease. Its formability characteristics closely resemble those of carbon steel.
