Type 904L is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance. The 904L alloy (UNS N08904) is a super austenitic stainless steel designed for diverse process environments, offering moderate to high resistance to various forms of corrosion. Its composition, rich in chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper, ensures superior corrosion resistance. With a highly alloyed chemistry (25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum), 904L surpasses 316L and 317L molybdenum-reinforced stainless steels in resisting chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and general corrosion. Originally developed to withstand dilute sulfuric acid, 904L is also resistant to most organic and inorganic acids, including hot phosphoric acid. Moreover, the 904L alloy is easily weldable and can be fabricated using standard shop procedures.

What are 904L's best qualities?
- This exceptional grade of stainless steel boasts minimal carbon content and is rich in copper, significantly enhancing its resistance to aggressive acids like sulfuric acid. The high nickel content further fortifies it against stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, it exhibits extraordinary resilience to crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, which can compromise other steel grades. It thrives in a variety of challenging environments, including warm waters and chloride exposure. Thus, it is ideally suited for both moderate and highly aggressive conditions.
- This variant of stainless steel is remarkably heat resistant, enduring temperatures as high as 400 degrees Celsius. It can be heat treated at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175 degrees Celsius, followed by rapid cooling. Such heat treatment is highly effective for hardening 904L steel.
- Owing to its composition, this steel is nonmagnetic. It also boasts excellent weldability, formability, and toughness across various conditions.
- 904L steel can be welded using standard methods without the need for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments.
What is 904L used for?
As previously highlighted, 904L steel is prominently used in the construction of high-quality watches. In industrial applications, its high purity and low sulfur content make it highly esteemed. Some typical applications for 904L include:

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L is readily weldable and processable using standard shop fabrication practices.
Cold Forming
- 904L is highly ductile and forms with ease. However, the addition of molybdenum and nitrogen may necessitate more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L require temperatures between 1562 to 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working should be followed by solution anneal and quenching. For 904L, if hot forming is halted at a temperature above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is quenched immediately, further heat treatment may not be necessary. It is crucial to quench the entire workpiece from above 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling falls below 2012°F (1100°C), or if cooling is too slow, hot working should always be followed by solution anneal and quenching. Solution annealing for 904L should be performed at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L renders it less machinable than 410 and 304 stainless steels.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding methods. Austenitic plate materials possess a uniform austenitic structure and balanced distribution of alloying elements. Elements such as molybdenum, chromium, and nickel redistribute during solidification post-welding. These segregations remain in the weld's cast structure and can reduce corrosion resistance in certain scenarios. However, segregation is less pronounced in 904L, typically welded with filler metal of the same composition as the base metal, though it can also be welded without filler metal.
- The recommended welding consumables for 904L are 20 25 CuL covered electrode and 20 25 CuL wire.
