HEAT TREATMENT For Enhanced Properties

  • For high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
    DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
  • 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool

In the solution-treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections ensures optimum properties. Larger section sizes or delayed quenching may result in less-than-optimum properties.

HARDNESS for Reliable Performance

Typical hardness: Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed state, and Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution treated and aged state.

Forgeability/Formability for Superior Craftsmanship

  • The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is meticulously forged at a high temperature of 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). To achieve optimal properties, a minimum reduction of 35% is recommended.
  • Forming the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar at room temperature can be challenging, even when annealed. Machinability

Machining the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be efficiently managed using austenitic stainless steel techniques. This involves slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tools, and the liberal use of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.

Weldability

The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is easily weldable in its annealed state or in a solution and partially aged condition, with aging occurring during post-weld heat treatment. To prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, welding should be done in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas shielding the molten metal and adjacent heated zones, along with a tail shield. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be performed without a protective atmosphere.

Special Considerations

Care must be taken to avoid contamination of the Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod with hydrogen during improper pickling and with oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can reduce ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Erosion Corrosion

Hydrogen Embrittlement

Titanium does not significantly absorb hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Typically, hydrogen absorption occurs only under three specific conditions:
