CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Our 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod Hot Rolled for Aviation offers superior resistance to corrosive attacks, outperforming the standard hardenable stainless steels.
- In most media, its corrosion resistance is comparable to that of Alloy 304.
- It excels in resisting corrosion in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
- Note: Exposure to stagnant sea water for extended periods can lead to crevice or pitting attacks.
WELDABILITY:
- Easily welded using most common fusion and resistance methods.
- Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended.
- Typically, no pre-heating is needed.
- Maintain an inter-pass temperature below 248°F.
- Enhanced toughness is achieved in the weld post complete heat treatment.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
- However, prolonged exposure to high temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, heat uniformly to 2150 / 2200°F and maintain this temperature for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- The ideal temperature range for hot forming is 650-900°F, maintaining the steel's austenitic state.
- To optimize hardening operations, re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F.
- Cool forgings below 90°F to ensure proper grain refinement.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Limited to mild operations in the annealed (solution treated) state due to inherent hardness.
- For severe cold working, heat treat to condition H1150 to prevent potential cracking.
- A bend radius exceeding 7T is often necessary.
- Post cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended to improve stress corrosion resistance.
MACHINABILITY:
- Can be machined effectively in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
