Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a super duplex steel featuring a low carbon content (up to 0.03%), a generous amount of chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). This remarkable alloy is engineered to meet the rigorous demands of applications requiring exceptional strength and superior corrosion resistance. It finds extensive use in chemical processing equipment, the petrochemical sector, and seawater equipment. Known for its outstanding resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, Duplex 2507 owes its exceptional pitting, crevice, and general corrosion resistance to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The manufacturing process for Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors that of other high-alloy steels. The journey begins in an electric arc furnace, where scrap steel is melted and alloying elements are added to achieve the desired composition. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter. Here, crucial processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases take place.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically introduced to the steel. The refined steel is then directed to the ladle furnace for inclusion adjustments.
- Subsequent to these initial procedures, the molten steel undergoes casting to form either large ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solid steel forms are further processed by reheating and forging or rolling to achieve the desired thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, a solution annealing heat treatment is applied, followed by rapid water quenching.
- Fabrication of Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be executed through both hot and cold forming techniques. For hot forming, the temperature range is set between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot forming, a solution annealing step at a minimum of 1052-1125 °C is necessary, followed by a swift water quench. Cold forming methods, such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, require subsequent heat treatment involving solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is categorized as super duplex stainless steel. Duplex stainless steels possess a microstructure that blends both ferrite and austenite in approximately equal proportions, thereby harnessing the best properties of each phase. This unique combination endows duplex stainless steel with superior corrosion resistance and robust mechanical strength. Different duplex grades offer varied levels of corrosion resistance. While duplex steels generally resist localized corrosion like pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the exact resistance depends on the specific grade and alloy mix. Duplex stainless steels are classified into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range, with super duplex stainless steel boasting a PREN number between 38 and 45.
