GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that marries excellent corrosion resistance and formability with commendable mechanical properties. Due to its strong resistance to corrosion, it finds extensive usage in various chemical applications, though it is predominantly employed in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F, a free-machining variant, is available in bar form, ideal for automatic screw machines. For added corrosion resistance, Grade 434 integrates molybdenum, offering a similar suite of beneficial characteristics as Grade 430.
- ASTM A240/A240M delineates the specifications for Grade 430 in flat rolled formats like plate, sheet, and coil. Forgings and bars are subject to analogous yet distinct specifications. Grade 430F's properties, particularly for bars, are specified under ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material demonstrates robust resistance to a broad array of corrosive environments, including certain organic acids. Peak corrosion resistance is achieved when polished or ground to a fine finish. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to Grade 304, with high resilience against stress corrosion cracking, typical of ferritic grades.
- The non-free machining Grade 430F shows a considerable reduction in resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, akin to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 can withstand oxidation up to 870°C during intermittent service and up to 815°C in continuous service. However, prolonged heating within the 400-600°C range can cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm thickness, then slowly cool in the furnace to 600°C before rapidly air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C may induce embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C, followed by air cooling or water quenching.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- For optimal welding results, we recommend pre-heating at 150-200°C.
- To alleviate embrittlement in both the weld metal and heat-affected zones, a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C is highly effective.
- Please be aware that grain refinement will not occur.
MACHINING:
- This grade is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- There is still a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Lightly drawn bars are more manageable for machining than those in the annealed condition.
- The free machining version, Grade 430F, significantly enhances machinability.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming easier than with grade 304.
- However, its lower ductility limits very severe operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
