GENERAL PROPERTIES

  • 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel renowned for its impressive overall corrosion resistance. This alloy showcases high resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). Additionally, it withstands oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and possesses superior creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel pipes. The material also exhibits excellent low temperature toughness.
  • Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S 32109) is the higher carbon content variant of this alloy (0.04 - 0.10). This composition is engineered to enhance creep resistance and strength at elevated temperatures above 1000oF (537°C). Often, the carbon content of the plate allows for dual certification, making it highly versatile.
  • Alloy 321 can be toughened exclusively through cold working and not by heat treatment. It can be effortlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.

  • Applicable in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.

PROCESSING

Alloy 321/H can be effortlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.

HOT FORMING

  • Optimal working temperatures of 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C) are advised for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes.
  • The alloy is not suitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
  • Post-working, the material must be water quenched or fully annealed to regain maximum corrosion resistance.

COLD FORMING

  • Highly ductile and easy to form.

WELDING

  • Easily welded by standard processes.
  • Post weld heat treatment is not required.

MACHINING

  • The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel but similar to 304.
