This robust alloy, containing a minimum of 11.5% chromium, is specially designed to combat corrosion, especially when tempered and polished post-hardening. While commonly hardened, it remains machinable and is ideal for applications demanding moderate heat resistance, high strength, and corrosion deterrence. Despite its superior hardness, some compromises are necessary, such as managing poor weldability and necessitating final heat treatments. Compared to austenitic stainless steels, martensitic variants like 410 offer lower corrosion resistance and reduced ductility in sub-zero temperatures while losing strength above freezing due to over-tempering. Notably, 410 stainless steel pipe, with its 12% chromium content, can be heat-treated to achieve varied mechanical properties, balancing high strength, hardness, and commendable corrosion resistance. It is ductile, forgeable, and magnetic in all conditions. However, it is not advisable for environments prone to severe corrosion.

• Corrosion Resistance
  The 410 grade is resistant to dry air, fresh water, mild bases and acids, foods, steam, and hot gases.
  For maximum heat and corrosion resistance, it must be hardened. Best performance is achieved when the surface is smooth.
  Heat Resistance
  Shows good resistance to scaling up to about 650°C. However, it is not generally recommended for use between 400 and 580°C, as mechanical properties are reduced.
  Heat Treatment
  Fully anneal at 815-900°C, slow furnace cool to 600°C, then air cool.
  Process anneal at 650-760°C and air cool.
  Welding
  Easily welded by all standard methods. Requires preheating to 150-260°C and post-weld annealing to minimize cracking risks.
