Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a premium super duplex steel with exceptionally low carbon content (up to 0.03%), and a robust alloy composition of chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). Engineered to meet the rigorous demands of applications necessitating superior strength and unmatched corrosion resistance, Duplex 2507 is ideal for use in chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater systems. Its formidable resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, coupled with high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, ensures exceptional protection against pitting, crevice corrosion, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is crafted through advanced processes similar to those used for other high-alloy steels. The journey begins in an electric arc furnace where scrap steel is melted and enhanced with specific alloys. Once liquefied, the steel is transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter, where crucial steps such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the expulsion of dissolved gases take place.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically added to the molten steel. The enhanced steel is then moved to the ladle furnace, where adjustments to inclusions are meticulously made.
- Following these initial stages, the molten steel transitions to the casting phase, producing either solitary ingots (large metal blocks) or continuously cast blooms. These solid steel forms are further refined through reheating and forging or rolling to the desired thickness. To ensure a consistent internal structure, a solution annealing heat treatment is performed, followed by a rapid water quenching process.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be manufactured using both hot and cold forming techniques. For hot forming, the temperature range should be between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot forming, a solution annealing process at a minimum temperature of 1052-1125 °C is essential, followed by a swift water quench. Cold forming methods, such as bending, deep drawing, extrusion, and pressing, must be followed by a heat treatment, including solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is classified as a super duplex stainless steel, a unique category of stainless steels that feature a microstructure containing both ferrite and austenite in nearly equal measures. This structure amalgamates the advantageous properties of both phases, delivering high corrosion resistance and superior mechanical strength. However, different grades of duplex steel offer varying levels of corrosion resistance. Despite their overall resilience against localized corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, the degree of resistance is contingent on the grade and alloy composition. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four types based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range, with super duplex stainless steel exhibiting a PREN number between 38 and 45.
