904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel characterized by a low carbon content. This high alloy steel, enriched with copper, enhances its resilience against potent reducing acids such as sulfuric acid. Additionally, the steel exhibits exceptional resistance to stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic in nature, 904L stainless steel showcases remarkable formability, toughness, and welding capabilities, thanks to its high concentrations of costly elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting hot seawater and chloride attack. Its high nickel content ensures exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Moreover, the addition of copper enhances resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, in both aggressive and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade stands between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. Unlike grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, 904L must undergo solution treatment after cold working to achieve maximum stress corrosion cracking resistance in sensitive conditions.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes exhibit outstanding resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. The extraordinary resilience against stress corrosion cracking is attributed to the high nickel content in its composition. Furthermore, the incorporation of copper enhances the grade's immunity to sulphuric acid and other reducing agents, making it durable in both aggressive and mild environments.
Grade 904L stainless steel's corrosion resistance is superior to standard 316L austenitic grades yet falls between that of super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum. Although less resistant compared to molybdenum-free grades 304L and 310L, it requires solution treatment post-cold working to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical conditions.
Grade 904L stainless steels offer commendable oxidation resistance. However, their structural integrity diminishes at elevated temperatures, particularly beyond 400°C, affecting overall performance.
Grade 904L stainless steels can undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is effective for hardening these grades.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be welded using all conventional methods without the need for pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments. Although susceptible to hot cracking in constrained weldments, utilizing grade 904L electrodes and rods as per AS 1554.6 standards ensures optimal welding results.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with minimal sulfur content, allowing them to be machined using standard methods. They can be easily bent to a small radius under cold conditions. While subsequent annealing is typically unnecessary, it should be performed when the fabrication involves severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
