Grade 904L Overview:

• Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. The addition of copper enhances its resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulfuric acid. Furthermore, it offers robust protection against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion.
• This grade showcases excellent formability and weldability, remaining non-magnetic under all conditions. Its austenitic structure endows it with exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures, making it a versatile choice for demanding applications.
• Nickel and molybdenum are incorporated in significant quantities in 904L, making it a premium-grade alloy. While Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) now serves many of the same applications at a lower cost, 904L remains indispensable for specific high-performance requirements.

Corrosion Resistance:

• 904L boasts exceptional resilience to a variety of corrosive environments, including sulfuric acid. Its PRE of 35 highlights its robustness against warm seawater and high chloride conditions. The material's high nickel content ensures superior stress corrosion cracking resistance, with copper providing additional protection against sulfuric and other reducing acids, particularly in the aggressive mid concentration range.
• In terms of corrosion performance, 904L is intermediate between the standard austenitic grade 316L and the super austenitic grades enriched with 6% molybdenum.
• Compared to molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L, 904L exhibits enhanced resistance to demanding corrosive conditions.
• To achieve optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance in demanding environments, solution treatment post cold-work is essential.

Heat Resistance:

• 904L presents strong oxidation resistance but is prone to structural instability at elevated temperatures (precipitation of brittle phases like sigma). Operating above 550°C is not recommended. According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the design stress values for 904L are set at 371°C.

Heat Treatment:

• Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C and cool rapidly. Note that 904L cannot be hardened via thermal treatment.

Welding:

• 904L can be welded successfully using all standard techniques. Due to its fully austenitic solidification, it is prone to heat cracking, especially in constrained weldments. It is advisable to avoid pre-heating and post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary. 904L welding rods and electrodes are prequalified by AS 1554.6.

Fabrication:

• 904L, being a high-purity, low-sulfur grade, does not machine as easily as other machinability-optimized grades. Nevertheless, conventional methods can be employed. Achieving a small bend radius is straightforward, usually performed cold. Subsequent annealing is generally not required unless the fabricated component will face severe stress corrosion conditions.

Typical Applications:

• 904L is ideally suited for processing plants handling sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plants, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.

Specified Properties:

• These properties are specified by ASTM A240M for flat rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Similar properties apply to other forms like pipe, tube, and bar, though their specifications may vary.

904L Stainless Steel Sheets in a Variety of Finishes

Our 904L stainless steel sheets come in various exquisite finishes: brushed finish, 2B smooth finish, or 8K mirror finish.

Each stainless steel sheet we offer is protected with a film on the finished side to prevent wear and marks during fabrication or installation. This protective film is easily removed. The backside remains unfinished.
