General Properties
The Alloy 420 Stainless Steel Plate stands as a robust martensitic stainless steel bar, an enhanced variant of Alloy 410. With a minimum of 12% chromium, it ensures valuable corrosion resistance. Compared to Alloy 410, the 420 version integrates additional carbon to significantly boost its strength and hardness. Post-annealing, it exhibits excellent ductility but can be hardened to a formidable Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC, marking it as the hardest among the 12% chromium grades. While its hardening characteristics make welding uncommon, it remains a possibility. Developed primarily for high hardness, martensitic stainless steels like Alloy 420 may sacrifice certain other properties. Its corrosion resistance, although substantial, falls short of typical austenitic grades and is constrained by a limited operational range due to reduced ductility at sub-zero temperatures and diminished strength from over-tempering at high temperatures. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when the metal is hardened and its surface is polished or ground.
Specifications: UNS S42000.
Applications:
The 420 stainless steel finds extensive use in scenarios demanding superior corrosion resistance coupled with hardness. Operating at temperatures above 800°F (427°C) is uncommon due to rapid hardening and compromised corrosion resistance. Typical applications include:
Knives
Blades
Surgical instruments
Needle valves
Shear blades
Scissors
Hand tools
Corrosion resistance:
Less resistant than austenitic grades and 17% chromium ferritic alloys.
Exhibits good resistance to atmospheric conditions, food environments, fresh water, and mild acids when in a hardened state.
Corrosion resistance decreases when annealed.
Maintains a smooth surface finish.
Heat resistance:
Not advisable for use beyond tempering temperatures due to loss of mechanical properties.
Scaling occurs around 1202°F (650°C).
Machinability:
Produces hard, elongated chip buildup.
Comparable to machining certain high-carbon tool steels.
Welding:
Welding is atypical due to its air-hardening nature.
Preheat to 300-400°F prior to welding.
Temper for 2 hours post-welding.
Hot Working:
A gradual increase to 1400°F followed by reaching 2000-2200°F is recommended.
Cool slowly post-furnace work to prevent cracking.
Reheating is necessary to keep the working temperature above 1600°F.
Cold Working:
Capable of enduring only mild cold working.
More aggressive forming efforts will lead to cracking.
Annealing:
Perform annealing at 1550-1650°F (843-900°C).
Allow the furnace to cool slowly.
Tempering:
Temper between 300-400°F.
Air cool to achieve maximum hardness and corrosion resistance.
Hardening:
Soak at 1850-1950°F and quench in hot oil.
