What Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is an exceptional super duplex steel, engineered with a minimal carbon content (up to 0.03%) and enriched with chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). Specifically crafted to meet the stringent requirements of high-strength and highly corrosion-resistant applications, this steel shines in industries such as chemical processing, petrochemicals, and seawater equipment. Its noteworthy resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking is attributed to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, making it exceptionally resilient to pitting, crevice, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel is fabricated in a manner similar to other advanced high-alloy steels. The process begins in an electric arc furnace, where scrap steel is melted and alloy elements are introduced. Once molten, the steel is transported to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter. Here, critical processes occur such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases.
- During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically added to the steel. The molten steel then proceeds to the ladle furnace for inclusion adjustments.
- After these initial stages, the molten steel moves to the casting phase, producing either solitary ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solidified forms are further refined through reheating and forging or rolling to achieve the desired thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, solution annealing followed by water quenching is applied.
- Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be crafted using both hot and cold forming techniques. For hot forming, temperatures should range between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. After hot forming, a solution annealing process must be conducted at 1052-1125 °C, followed by rapid water quenching. Cold forming processes such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing require subsequent heat treatment, which includes solution annealing and quenching.
How Does Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Differ From Duplex Steel?
- Duplex 2507 stainless steel stands out as a super duplex stainless steel, featuring a microstructure of both ferrite and austenite in almost equal parts. This dual-phase composition bestows duplex stainless steel with exceptional corrosion resistance and substantial mechanical strength. Different grades of duplex steel offer varying levels of corrosion resistance. Notably, they resist localized corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. These steels are categorized into four groups based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number). Super duplex stainless steel, including Duplex 2507, boasts a PREN range of 38 to 45.
