GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that masterfully balances excellent corrosion resistance and remarkable formability with practical mechanical properties. Its superb resistance to corrosion makes it a versatile choice for various chemical applications, with its primary use in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is a free-machining variant of this grade, presented in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, enriched with molybdenum, shares the same beneficial properties as Grade 430 but with enhanced corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum addition.
- ASTM A240/A240M defines the characteristics of Grade 430 for flat-rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Other forms, such as forgings and bars, have similar but not identical properties as per their specific standards. The qualities of Grade 430F for bars are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 demonstrates robust resistance to a broad spectrum of corrosive environments, including various organic acids. Achieve peak corrosion resistance with a high polish or grind. Its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion rivals that of 304 grade. Like other ferritic grades, 430 boasts exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, shows notably lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C during intermittent service and 815°C during continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be counteracted by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, maintain for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slowly furnace cool to 600°C before quickly air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C, followed by air cooling or water quenching.
- This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is required.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat affected zone can be alleviated by a post-weld anneal at temperatures ranging from 790-815°C. This process ensures enhanced durability and performance.
- Grain refinement will not occur under these conditions, ensuring the material maintains its robust characteristics.
MACHINING:
- This material is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304, providing superior workability.
- There is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool, which should be monitored during machining.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition, offering better precision.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining version of 430, is significantly easier to machine, enhancing productivity and efficiency.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate of this grade makes bending and forming operations somewhat easier than with grade 304.
- However, its lower ductility restricts very severe operations, making it essential to carefully plan fabrication processes.
- Severe bends should be executed with the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction to avoid material failure.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible, ensuring the material's adaptability in various applications.
