CORROSION RESISTANCE:

316L Stainless steel rod

  • 316L stainless steel rod offers superior resistance to corrosion compared to 304, thanks to its higher chromium and molybdenum content.
    The increased chromium and molybdenum provide robust protection against various atmospheric and corrosive environments.
  • In warm chloride environments, it may suffer from pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking above 122°F (50°C).
  • This material is considered resistant to potable water with chlorides up to 1000mg/L at ambient temperatures, decreasing to 500mg/L at
    140°F (60°C).
  • Often called the 'marine grade stainless steel,' 316L is not resistant to warm seawater.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

  • 316L exhibits excellent oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
  • Grade 316L is particularly resistant to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • 316L offers outstanding weldability through all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals.
  • Post-weld annealing is necessary for Grade 316 to achieve maximum corrosion resistance, but it is not required for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

  • The annealing temperature range for 316L is 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
  • 316L cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
  • Special considerations should be made to manage its higher coefficient of thermal expansion and avoid warping or distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • Most producers recommend a maximum forging temperature range of 2100°F to 2300°F.
  • Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C) for optimal results.
  • For the best corrosion resistance, give the forgings a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • 316/316L stainless steel rods are highly tough and ductile, making them suitable for cold working operations such as roll forming, swaging, cold heading, and deep drawing.
    These rods can be bent and manipulated without difficulty.
  • Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve stress.

MACHINEABILITY:

  • Machining 316/316L stainless steel rods is somewhat more challenging than Type 304 due to their toughness.
  • The machining process produces tough and strong chip characteristics.
  • Use chip breakers and curlers to enhance machinability.
  • Utilize large tools and ample cutting fluids for the best results.
  • Heavy positive feeds at low speeds are recommended as 316/316L work hardens quickly.
