431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts outstanding corrosion resistance against a broad spectrum of corrosive environments. While it exhibits some resilience to salt water in colder southern seas, it may not perform as well in the warmer tropical waters. Overall, the corrosion resistance of 431 Round Bar Material is comparable to, or slightly less than, that of 304 Grade Material. It delivers optimal performance when the surface is smooth and in the hardened and tempered state.
This material resists scaling effectively in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use at temperatures exceeding the relevant tempering temperature due to a decline in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is not practical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. For Process Anneal, heat to 620-660°C and then air cool.
Harden this grade by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, followed by quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C can be beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Temper according to the mechanical requirements, using the temperature guidelines in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to diminished impact toughness; although, the effect is less pronounced than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding this material is challenging due to the risk of cracking. Preheating to 200-300°C is advisable before welding. Using Grade 410 filler rod is possible, but Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will yield more ductile welds if matching properties are not essential. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
In its annealed condition, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, if hardened above 30HRC, machining becomes more difficult. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances machining speeds and tool life.
Common applications include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products under ASTM A276. Similar, though not necessarily identical, properties are specified for other products like plate and forgings in their respective specifications.
Stainless steel round bars are extensively utilized across various sectors, from construction to automotive parts. Recognizing the diverse range of applications, Daxun Alloys offers these bars in various grades and sizes. Our advanced cutting service ensures precision, meeting your exact specifications consistently.
