General properties:
- Ferritic and pure chromium, non-hardenable grade 430 stainless steel boasts excellent formability and corrosion resistance along with practical mechanical qualities. Its resistance to *** corrosion makes it valuable in certain chemical applications; however, it is primarily used in appliance parts and automotive trim.
- Grade 430F, a more machineable variant of grade 430, is available in bar form and is ideal for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434, containing molybdenum, shares the same advantageous characteristics as grade 430, with the added molybdenum providing enhanced corrosion resistance.
- ASTM A240/A240M specifies these premium 430 qualities for flat rolled goods, including plate, sheet, and coil. While similar, the qualities listed for bars and forgings may vary slightly. ASTM A582 details the Grade 430F characteristics specifically for bars.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 stainless steel offers excellent resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including *** and some organic acids. Maximum corrosion resistance is achieved when the material is highly polished or ground. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 exhibits exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, has significantly reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high-sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and up to 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating within the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be eliminated by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C and quickly air cool. Avoid slow cooling from 540-400°C to prevent embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade cannot be hardened through thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat to 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C can relieve embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone.
- Grain refinement will not occur.
MACHINING:
- Grade 430 is easier to machine than standard austenitic grades like 304.
- There is still a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Lightly drawn bars are easier to machine compared to those in the annealed condition.
- The free machining version, Grade 430F, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming easier than with grade 304.
- However, the lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be performed with the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is possible.
