904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a premium high-alloy austenitic material designed to endure severe corrosive environments with unmatched corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized, low-carbon austenitic alloy known for its superior resistance to strong reducing acids like sulfuric acid, stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic and boasting exceptional formability, toughness, and weldability, 904L features high concentrations of molybdenum and nickel, enhancing its durability.
904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting hot seawater and chloride attacks. Thanks to its high nickel content, it offers exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. The added copper significantly improves resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents. Its corrosion resistance is superior to standard 316L but slightly below super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum. For optimal performance in sensitive environments, solution treatment following cold working is recommended.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes exhibit extraordinary resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. This remarkable resilience against stress corrosion cracking is attributed to the high nickel content in its composition. Moreover, the inclusion of copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, ensuring superior performance in both aggressive and mild environments.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L lies between that of super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades. While it is less resistant than grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, it requires solution treatment post-cold working to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steels offer commendable oxidation resistance. However, their structural stability diminishes at elevated temperatures, particularly above 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be solution heat-treated between 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is effective for hardening these grades.
Welding grade 904L stainless steels is achievable using conventional methods without the need for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. Nonetheless, they may be prone to hot cracking in constrained weldments. Grade 904L electrodes and rods are recommended for welding according to AS 1554.6 standards.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with minimal sulfur content. They are easily machinable using standard methods and can be bent to a small radius under cold conditions. While subsequent annealing is generally unnecessary, it is advisable when fabrication occurs under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
