The 431 Stainless Steel Bar Material exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance against an extensive array of corrosive environments. While it demonstrates some resistance to saltwater in cold southern waters, its effectiveness diminishes in warmer tropical waters. Generally, the corrosion resistance of the 431 Round Bar Material is on par with, or slightly less than, that of the 304 Grade Material. Optimal performance is achieved when the surface is smooth and the material is in a hardened and tempered state.
This material withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use at temperatures exceeding the relevant tempering temperature due to a decrease in mechanical properties.
A full anneal is impractical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. For process annealing, heat to 620-660°C and allow to air cool.
Hardening is achieved by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C is beneficial for complex parts or those already hardened. Tempering should be adjusted to meet mechanical requirements, following the temperatures indicated in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to decreased impact toughness, although this effect is less pronounced in 431 than in most other martensitic grades.
Welding this material is challenging due to the potential for cracking. Pre-heating at 200-300°C is advised before welding. Although a Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will yield more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not essential. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, once hardened to above 30HRC, machining becomes more complex. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and tool life.
Nuts and bolts, Propeller shafting, Pump shafts, Beater bars, Marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products under ASTM A276. Similar, though not necessarily identical, properties are specified for other products such as plate and forgings in their respective specifications.
