CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Our POSCO 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod, cold-rolled for aviation, stands out for its exceptional resistance to corrosive environments. It outperforms standard hardenable stainless steels, ensuring durability and reliability.
- In most media, its corrosion resistance is comparable to that of Alloy 304, making it a versatile choice for various industrial applications.
- Ideal for use in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries, it resists corrosion effectively, ensuring longevity and maintenance-free operation.
- However, exposure to stagnant seawater for extended periods may lead to crevice or pitting attack, necessitating proper handling and usage.
WELDABILITY:
- This alloy can be successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance methods, providing flexibility in fabrication and assembly.
- Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended, ensuring optimal performance and integrity of the material.
- Generally, no pre-heating is required, simplifying the welding process while maintaining efficiency.
- To ensure quality, the inter-pass temperature should be limited to 248°F, preserving the material's properties.
- Post-weld heat treatment enhances toughness, making the welds robust and resilient.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- The alloy boasts excellent resistance to oxidation up to approximately 1100°F, making it suitable for high-temperature applications.
- Long-term exposure to elevated temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions, so usage parameters should be monitored.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For optimal forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch, ensuring thorough and even processing.
- Preferred hot forming temperature range is between 650-900°F, maintaining the steel's austenitic structure for best results.
- Post-forging, re-heat treat at 1875-1925°F to prepare the material for hardening operations.
- Cool forgings to below 90°F to ensure refinement of the grain structure, enhancing the material's properties.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- In its annealed (solution treated) condition, Alloy 17-4 is suited for mild cold forming operations due to its inherent hardness.
- For more severe cold working, heat treating to condition H1150 is advised to prevent cracking and ensure material integrity.
- A bend radius greater than 7T is often necessary, providing flexibility without compromising the material.
- Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature after cold forming is recommended to enhance stress corrosion resistance, ensuring long-term durability.
MACHINABILITY:
- 17-4 pH Stainless Steel can be efficiently machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions, offering versatility in manufacturing processes.
