ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code caps the upper temperature at 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure above this threshold leads to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 boasts over twice the strength of traditional austenitic stainless steels when annealed. It can also be enhanced in the cold-worked condition with a yield strength surpassing 160 ksi. It retains excellent toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is amenable to cold forming but has a high work-hardening rate, necessitating intermediate anneals. Post-hot forming or cold-forming, annealing is suggested for optimal stress corrosion resistance.

As the most commonly used duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength twice that of regular austenitic grades. Machining Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging than working with 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The process demands higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. To ensure optimal machining, adhere to these guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions short to reduce vibration; C) Limit the tool nose radius to maintain a sharp carbide edge while ensuring strength; D) Sequence machining to keep the depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
