Type 321 stainless steel is an advanced austenitic steel, boasting all the benefits of Type 304 with added titanium and carbon. This unique composition results in superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, and remarkable toughness even in cryogenic conditions. The titanium addition offers multiple benefits: it prevents detrimental carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of welds, provides partial defense against intergranular corrosion, and mitigates embrittlement in high-risk weld areas. Type 321H, which is stabilized with titanium, excels in environments where parts are exposed to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and corrosive conditions. Its nickel-rich, titanium-stabilized structure prevents chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries, preserving corrosion resistance. This grade is highly responsive to cold working and can be easily welded, often without the need for post-weld annealing, ensuring exceptional performance in a broad range of corrosive environments.

GENERAL PROPERTIES

• 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance. It boasts high resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to the chromium carbide precipitation temperature range of 800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C). The alloy resists oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and surpasses 304 and 304L steel pipes in creep and stress rupture properties. Additionally, it exhibits impressive low-temperature toughness.
• Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S32109) is a higher carbon version of this alloy (0.04 - 0.10), engineered for enhanced creep resistance and strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°F (537°C). The carbon content allows for dual certification in most cases.
• Alloy 321 can be toughened only through cold working, not by heat treatment. It is easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

• Exhibits good general corrosion resistance comparable to 304.
• Developed for use in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
• Suitable for most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
• Usable in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
• Effective in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
• Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
• Utilized in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
• Not suitable for chloride solutions, even in small concentrations, or for sulfuric acid service.

PROCESSING

Alloy 321/H can be easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.

HOT FORMING

• Recommended working temperatures are 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C) for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes.
• Not suitable for work at temperatures below 1700°F (927°C).
• Material must be water quenched or fully annealed after working to regain maximum corrosion resistance.

COLD FORMING

• Highly ductile and easily forms.

WELDING

• Readily welded by most standard processes.
• Post weld heat treatment is not necessary.

MACHINING

• The hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel but similar to 304.
