Type 321 stainless steel is an advanced austenitic steel, boasting all the benefits of Type 304 with added titanium and carbon. This unique composition results in superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, and remarkable toughness even in cryogenic conditions. The titanium addition offers multiple benefits: it prevents detrimental carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of welds, provides partial defense against intergranular corrosion, and mitigates embrittlement in high-risk weld areas. Type 321H, which is stabilized with titanium, excels in environments where parts are exposed to carbide precipitation temperatures (800°F-1500°F) and corrosive conditions. Its nickel-rich, titanium-stabilized structure prevents chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries, preserving corrosion resistance. This grade is highly responsive to cold working and can be easily welded, often without the need for post-weld annealing, ensuring exceptional performance in a broad range of corrosive environments.
